Now, a few words about THE BEST 7. . . .
Many reviewers place a great importance on the wrong things, such as price, storage space, bandwidth, set-up fees, etc.
Not me!
First of all, all of the hosting companies in THE BEST 7 cost less than $8 per month for their least expensive shared hosting plans (if you purchase a full year). Also, all of these hosts offer FREE set-up, a FREE domain, 350+ GB of storage (more than enough for someone’s site), and 3500+ GB of bandwidth per month.
So, with that being said, you may ask “So, what criteria do you use to rank these sites?” I’m glad you asked. I rank these sites based on features, ease of use, flexibility, and most of all, CUSTOMER SERVICE.
See how I used all caps there?
Customer service is THE most important thing to look for with shared hosting packages. Since shared hosting is so inexpensive, many companies sign up as many customers as possible, overload the servers, and then let the poor, overworked (and underpaid) support staff take care of resulting chaos. Why is great customer service so important? Let me tell you a little story to help convey my message. . . .
Five years ago, when I hosted my very first site for a class project with an unknown web hosting company. This is where I experienced (first-hand) how poor customer service (and tech support) can turn a bad experience into a horrible one.
I had worked for weeks on my web site project. When it was due I sent my professor the link. He clicked on the site, but the site did not display. He e-mailed back to tell me that my site wasn’t coming up!
I called tech support, waited on hold for an hour, only to be told that everything was alright on their end. After confirming that it wasn’t a campus firewall issue, I called back in and waited another hour and received a different message, “Oh yeah, our servers have been down all day. Sorry.”
Needless to say, I turned bright red (according to my roommate), lost my lady-like composure, and gave him a few choice words about his servers, his company, his co-workers, and the horse he rode in on.
I will never let anyone else suffer through that, if I can help it.
When hosting a web site, it’s not a matter of if you will have problems. It is a matter of when. . . .
Technology isn’t perfect, but a top-notch hosting company will have a knowledgeable and friendly support staff ready to fix the issues when they arise. I cannot stress the importance of this enough.
Hope this information helps you in your journey to find the perfect web host.
LOVE, SARAH
